Couples need to know from their partner - will you be there for me when I need you the most? Reactive patterns of defensive interactions that involve blaming, attacking, placating, withdrawal, or shutdown can erode a sense of safety in the couple's relationship and trust between one another. Couples can be assisted to soothe their own nervous systems in times of stress, and to become connected to and authentically communicate their underlying feelings and needs to each other, while staying curious about the other’s feelings and needs. Couples can begin to move away from their positions and start to develop healthier ways of connecting with themselves and each other. Past trauma can contribute to unhealthy ways of coping and interacting in the couple relationship. Helping the couple understand their past histories and how they contribute to the present-day conflict can empower couples to move forward in healthier ways.
